Lesson 2 From an Ice Storm
There is generally peaceful weather after a major storm passes through. This recent ice storm was no different. Yesterday the sun came out, blue sky replaced the dark clouds of the day before, and the temperatures rose. It was so serene to step out early and catch the sun rise. The ice-covered tree limbs glistened in the glow of the early morning sun.
During the storm as the freezing rain began to accumulate on the trees I noticed something amazing happened. The trees began to bend under the weight of the ice. Some small trees bent until their tops touched the ground. Taller trees had their limbs bent to a degree I never thought possible.
Under the gradual, and I emphasize gradual, increase in the weight of ice on their branches, most trees generally bend but do not break.
People are like trees in an ice storm. Throughout our journey, the cares of this world can begin to weigh us down. Most of us bend under the weight, but do not break. God has given us a way to rid ourselves of that excess load. A bent knee is God’s solution to avoid a bent life. Prayer allows God’s Son to melt the ice away as fast as it falls. Prayers allow us to stand tall when the ice storms of life, weigh others down.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
