My Comfort Zone
I feel comfortable doing what I know how to do, cooking simple meals, driving in smaller cities, eating only food I am familiar with, and living in the country. Ask me to drive through Chicago or prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner and I am out of my comfort zone. When married Monika, she introduced me to all sorts of food I had never eaten before. I was used to eating cheddar cheese. She ate Brie. I left my comfort zone and now I enjoy Brie. It’s a delicious soft cheese, that originated from France. We went shopping and she bought what looked like raw salmon. She said it is Lox. I left my comfort zone and now enjoy Lox, bagels, and cream cheese for breakfast. Lox is cured, though its texture is raw.
I am learning that being forced to leave my comfort zone causes me to grow. Leaving our comfort zone is a good thing. When we stay in our comfort zone we don’t grow. Often life, though “comfortable” becomes stale, routine.
I think of Jesus’ disciples. There were fishermen, a tax collector, and a political agitator. Jesus looked at them and said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” I am sure each looked at Him and thought, you are asking me to do what? They left their comfort zone and turned the world upside down. Because they were willing to leave their comfort zone, millions have heard the Good News and have been born again. Don’t fear leaving your comfort zone and doing things God asks you to do! Obeying God’s Word will take you out of your “comfort zone.”
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22 NIV
