Stewards of God’s Earth
Today, April 22 is Earth Day. For 55 years Earth Day has grown to where 192 countries and over 1 billion people are expected to participate. 7,500,000 pounds of garbage will be removed through the Great Global Cleanup.
We all have pet peeves, and my number one pet peeve has always been the amount of garbage strewn along highway roadways and city curbs. This became more evident when I saw workers cleaning up the litter along the highways and seeing the number of bags waiting for pickup. The U.S. spends nearly 11.5 billion dollars a year cleaning up litter! All states have littering fines. I would like to know how much has been collected. The truth is there is no accountability or punishment for a law that remains unenforced. As Christians we celebrate Earth Day; we are entrusted to take care of God’s beautiful creation and all its inhabitants. In Genesis 1:28 it says, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds in the sky and every living creature that moves on the ground”. Psalm 24:1 tells us “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it”. In other words, we are merely stewards of God’s creation. As Earth Day is celebrated every April 22, we are reminded of our Christian responsibility to be stewards of God’s creation. “You shall not pollute the land in which you live.” – Numbers 35:33
