Rejoice
Recently in my quiet time, I’ve been reminiscing about all the Methodist hymns my family sang when I grew up attending a Methodist Church. After all, the most prolific hymn writer was Charles Wesley. He wrote 8,989 hymns in his lifetime. It was reported he wrote 10 lines of verse every day for 50 years. I still have a Methodist Hymnal published in 1989 which contains 55 of Charles Wesley’s hymns.
My days are often filled with pain, which impacts my emotional well-being. It is during these times that I turn to an uplifting hymn. One of my favorite hymns is “Rejoice, the Lord Is King”. Wesley wrote this hymn because he wanted to lift people’s eyes above their circumstances to Christ the King. The melody and words of the chorus blend as the melody rises as we sing: “ Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice; again I say, rejoice”. “Lift up your heart” encourages us to elevate our thoughts and emotions towards God. And we are to use our voices to rejoice- not just once but twice!
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4 NIV
