Day 67
Read: Numbers 27:1 – 29:40
Today’s reading starts with an interesting focus on inheritance. The daughters of Zelophehad showed bold faith when they approached the proper leadership channels with confidence seeking their inheritance. They were not just asking for property previously held by their father but for what had been promised – proving their faith in God’s promise. Moses affirmed them and elevated them to equality with their male cousins in terms of family wealth. This can be viewed as God not giving secondary accordance to women and also not elevating them above men. Instead, His balance of power is perfect and His expectations purposeful. From what may appear as a trivial legal matter, the daughters of Zelophehad speak to us about God’s priorities for community welfare and personal security. We are called to bring our needs to God, trusting in His wisdom and fairness.
What “inheritance” or promise are you hesitant to claim? Take it to God in prayer this week.
Numbers 28-29 are further instructions for daily, weekly, and monthly offerings as previously read about in Leviticus. The details we read about today emphasize that God desires consistent, intentional worship, not just occasional, leftovers, or high-effort sacrifices. Rather than waiting for a “special” time to be spiritual, focus on a consistent daily rhythm of devotion (prayer, scripture reading, worship) as a “pleasing aroma” to God. Our obedience, not the sacrificing itself, is what brings God pleasure. “Regular burnt offering” were not made for atonement, instead they expressed praise and thanks.
Something to remember as we continue reading our Bibles chronologically… God’s moral law was capable of revealing sin and bringing condemnation and accusation, but the law was incomplete in that it was not capable of offering relief or salvation. Hence, the Israelites needed a system of sacrifices.
Spoiler Alert: Christ is the completed sacrifice, offered “once for all “
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that Your justice is for everyone and that You invite us to approach You with our needs. Help me to be bold in my faith and consistent in my worship, offering You my daily life as a sacrifice. Amen.
