I have never been an inmate in a prison, but I did get to go inside a prison as a visitor. Doors with steel bars open before you, and as you move forward, they close behind you. Once inside you are confronted with rows of very confining cells. There is no escaping their plight, humanly speaking, until their time has been served. The prisoners stared at me as I walked by. It was an experience I can vividly remember today as if it were yesterday. It was sobering.
That is a picture of what my life was like before I became a follower of Jesus. Oh, I wasn’t locked up in some detention facility, but I was locked up inside with my pride, selfishness, anger, and fears. Humanly speaking there was no way of escaping my very nature. It stayed with me wherever I went. It impacted how I acted and what I said. Then Jesus did something very special. He saved me. Oh, I still struggle with all the above, but there is a new awareness and power to gain victory over the sin in my life that was not there before. That is liberating. Thank you, Jesus, for setting me free.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free… So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:32; 36 NIV
