On The Job Training
I have spent a good number of years in school preparing me for what would come next. There was grade school, high school, college, and seminary. However, I spent many years not doing what I was trained to do. I was a bridge tender, carpenter, foundry worker, soil scientist, peace corps volunteer, and an insurance agent, during my journey. I just learned to do things on the job. When I did do what I was trained to do, like missionary work or pastoring, my schooling, though helpful, did not teach me everything I needed to know. To be frank, I am still learning on the job.
Learning on the job can be intimidating. I get that, you get that, and so did Jesus’ disciples. They knew nothing about what God had planned for their lives. Jesus’ disciples learned on the job. They were fishermen, one was a government worker, and another wanted to topple the government. None were trained pastors, teachers, or missionaries yet they proceeded to turn the world upside down.
Doing what God asks us to do can be extremely frightening. We have never done it before. Every church has a sign outside its doors which reads, help wanted, apply inside. God has equipped everyone of His children that walks through the doors of the church to do those jobs. As with any “job” most of what you will do has to be learned on the job, but God and others will help train you. You just need to apply.
“Serve the Lord with gladness;” Psalm 100:2a NKJV
