Last week I went to visit a friend who is in an assisted living facility. The person is wheelchair bound. Short of a miracle that is how the person will spend the rest of their life.
I met another person in the same facility who was of similar age, could walk and get around just fine, but for whatever reason was also confined there. I asked the person if they could walk to a nearby store, just to do something different. They can only walk outside if they agree to stay on the property. Though somewhat freer they too were confined. The only way that my friend or this other person could get to leave their confinement was if someone came and took them out.
In a much broader view, the Bible speaks about people being confined by the structure of this world. Who can deliver us from the confinement of this world? Who can come and set us free? I mean really free. Free from selfishness, pride, worry, and that big one death. Only Jesus, who Himself was raised from the dead, can do that! The same Holy Spirit that raised Him from the dead indwells all believers and will one day do the same for us.
When Jesus sets us free, we can live as His children. We are free to do His will. Our minds are free to pursue peace, joy, and contentment. Oh, it is still a journey, but it is a journey free from chains.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV
