Listening
I enjoy being outside at sunrise and sunset. That is when birds are most active. You can hear each bird singing their unique songs. The Orioles have one of the most beautiful voices.
I used to spend hours just walking around in the woods listening to birds sing. I would try and find the bird making its unique sound, identify the bird, and then remember the song that went with the bird. After awhile I no longer needed to see the bird to know what bird was making that sound. Even though I am 60 years older than when I learned many of those sounds, I don’t need to see the first bluebirds return in the spring. I know their back when I hear their voices.
We communicate through our “human voices.” If we have not developed the skill of listening to birds, we better have developed the skill of listening to others. Often what people say is not all they are communicating. The tone in one’s voice may communicate more than the words coming out of their mouth. Listening is a skill. We know how frustrating it is when people do not “listen” to what we are saying.
When we talk with God, He listens and knows what we are trying to say even if we do not say it right. God listens to us and we listen to Him. He speaks to our hearts. We need to listen for that still small voice. We “know” what it “sounds” like. Listen for it in the morning and in the evening.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3 NIV
