Treasure
I was given a metal detector from the church I am pastoring. A couple of days ago I was invited to go metal detecting on a property that had two interesting sites on it, a native American camp site and an old hermit’s house. Being my first time, I didn’t know what to expect but was full of expectation.
Not long into the search the detector indicated there was something buried. What was my first find going to be? Was it going to be some ancient artifact from the encampment, an old coin someone dropped, or maybe a ring. I dug, sifted the dirt through my hands, looked, sifted more dirt, and there it was a small 22 caliber brass shell casing. I was excited and disappointed at the same time. Excited I could find something that small under the ground yet disappointed it was not something more valuable.
After a few hours I found more shells casings from different caliber guns, a door hinge, one beer can, pull tabs, nails, one quarter, one nickel, and a large metal plate that must have fallen off something.
However, there is nothing I could find in this world that would be more valuable than what I already found, Jesus and the kingdom of heaven. There is nothing I would give in exchange for it. There is no price too high to buy it if it could be bought. It is priceless.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.” Matthew 13:44a NIV
