A Poison Mushroom
I have picked and eaten many wild mushrooms. Monika always makes me eat the first one, if I have found a new species of edible mushroom. I don’t blame her for that. If I misidentified the mushroom, consuming it could be fatal. The danger is picking wild mushrooms is there are what I call, look alikes. One brownish mushroom can be safe and one growing near it, that is also brownish, may not be so safe.
There is one mushroom called a “Death Cap” mushroom found in Wisconsin that if consumed can be fatal. I have read stories of people who died from eating poisonous mushrooms. You say, how could someone write anything if they are dead. Well, therein is the painful truth. Death is not instantaneous. It takes time for the poisons to shut down your organs.
One amazing thing was how those who were dying from eating a poisonous mushroom commented how that deadly mushroom was the best tasting mushroom they had ever consumed. What a lesson. Just because something looks safe. Just because something tastes good, does not make it safe.
The same can be said for our spiritual journey on earth. There are many sins that look satisfying to the eye and enjoyable for the moment, but the consequences can be spiritually fatal. Oh, you may get away with it for a time but understand, the poison has already entered your mind and heart and unleashed its destructive power. But, there is hope!
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” 1 John 2:1 NIV
