The other morning as I was taking my dog, Jack, outside I was blessed by the sounds of robins migrating south. They stop by our property annually to fill up on the fall’s bounty of ripe choke cherries. The large group of hummingbirds we fed all summer had headed south earlier.
Certain parts of this world remain the same, year in and year out. Nothing changes.
When God asks me to change, I am like those robins and hummingbirds, I want to keep doing what I have been doing all my life. It is what comes naturally.
Here is one of my issues. God made it clear to me that I need to get control of my eating. One week went by and my eating habits improved. Far less sweets, far fewer between meal snacks, and more controlled portions. With God’s help, the week was a success. I can’t wait to get on the scale. Surely, I will have lost 10 pounds by now. What? I didn’t lose a pound! I ask. Was it worth it?
Some habits can be overcome instantly with immediate gratification. Some habits can take weeks, months, or years to overcome. Our Christian life is a journey. It is worth the effort no matter how long it takes.
God help me to look more like Jesus tomorrow, next week, and next year than today.
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on” Philippians 3:12 NIV
Roy Frisque says
Was it worth it? – YES! Because the focus moves past oneself to a greater good.
You move past yourself into a closer relationship with God! (Win-WIN)
Keep it up!
I can’t wait to see the goodness God has for you! And how his word manifests in you!
It’s God’s blueprint to make us all better than we were…

Smoking is nasty! And obviously it will do major damage to your health. But it’s something I still think about as my habit of dealing with stress. I quite the first time maybe 15 years ago. Fell back in to it a few times since then. But this last time I stopped in the middle of a one of the most stressful times in my life. This is also the time I realized praying and asking God for strength was really the habit I needed to become addicted to!
Paul D Smith says
God is glorified in the journey.
