Alert Eyes Avoid Accidents
As I drive back and forth to church on country roads, I attempt be alert all the time. Joggers and bicycle riders use the back roads. Some do not wear reflective clothing or have blinking lights attached to their bicycles. There are road kills from the night before. I don’t want to run over raccoons, skunks, or porcupines again. When I see one of those my attention goes up a notch. I went 55 years without hitting a deer, but that streak ended not that long ago. I felt so awful when that happened. Just last week I narrowly missed another one. Now I am always watching for the next deer to jump out in front of me.
One way I can avoid accidents or “trouble” each day is by being spiritually alert. Life is a lot like driving down a country road. There is so much beautiful scenery to take in, but if you don’t pay attention, accidents happen.
If I don’t pay attention to what comes out of my mouth, I can needlessly offend people. What comes out of my mouth, I cannot take back. The Bible says I must be on a constant state of high alert with what I say because what comes out of my mouth, can do so much damage.
I must be alert to what I let my mind dwell on. My mother always told me an idle mind is the devil’s workshop and I get it. Be alert today!
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 NIV
