Gardens
My neighbor about four years ago decided to plant a garden in what was before a hay field. You guessed it, lots of weeds. The first year he pulled weeds by hand almost continuously. The second year he covered the area with very heavy fabric and cut round holes in the fabric to plant his tomatoes and peppers in. Far fewer weeds to pull. The third year he planted pumpkins in every opening and had a nice crop of pumpkins. Along came the fourth year and a baby came into the picture. Priorities changed and the garden sat idle. As I drive by his garden daily to feed my sheep, I could not help but notice huge weeds growing out of every round hole. The weeds came back where they could.
What took place in his garden reminded me of what happens in my life. Sins, which are like weeds, want to constantly take root in my life. It is a constant spiritual battle to get rid of them. They want to choke out that which is producing fruit in my life. If I neglect my spiritual life they come right back. What is the best way to get rid of them forever? Human effort is not the answer. God’s accomplishment on the cross is the answer. Inward transformation by the grace of God is the source of power.
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,” Titus 2:11-12 NIV

What a neat analogy!
Weeds are sins.
Fabric is the word of God.
Holes are our short comings that allows Sin to take root.
Man is God’s worker.
