The Crabapple Tree
Outside the front entrance of our church there is this crabapple tree. In the spring there are thousands of white blooms which add beauty to the landscape. Bees and bugs are busy pollinating all the blossoms. In the fall the tree is filled with thousands of small crabapples.
Without exception, come spring, robins or finches flock to that tree and begin harvesting all that small fruit. Oh, they make a mess of things on the sidewalk, but it is their only source of food. Without that tree many of those birds may starve when the spring snow comes and there is nothing else to eat.
This year it was a large flock of robins that first showed up. A six-inch snowfall came this week and covered the ground. Those robins were able to not only survive but thrive on the fruit that tree provided them with.
The one thing I wonder every year when a flock of birds show up at that tree is how did they find it? One relatively small tree in a landscape of thousands of trees, yet they come to it by the dozens. Then it came to me. They had to be searching for it.
Unless we search for truth, we will never find it. The world says look in this or that book. God says look in the book I gave to you, the Bible. The truth it contains will not only allow you to survive for eternity, but it will allow you to thrive. It contains the truth about a special bread, called the Bread of Life.
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’ John 6:35 NIV
