Content or Comfortable
If someone were to ask me, “Do you want to be content or comfortable,” I would say yes. I want to be both. Who would not want to be content, free from all doubts, fears, worries, guilt, shame, and totally at peace with God and self. Who would not want to be comfortable, living in a nice home where the temperature is exactly what you like 24/7, where the pantry is stocked with enough food to last for weeks, and where you are able to sit in your favorite chair and relax after a long day.
Then I thought, that is what Paul Smith wants, but am I missing something? Is that what God wants? Certainly, the Word of God is clear. Godliness with contentment is great gain. God desires us to be at peace with Him and self. Being at peace with self and God does require a level of spirituality. I get that.
What about being comfortable? That is another matter. Jesus did not have a place to lay His head, ouch! That hits me hard. The Apostle Paul was flogged, imprisoned, stoned, and left for dead. That does not sound like a very comfortable life either.
Then it came to me. Serving God and others, which is an act of worship, takes us out of our comfort zone. However, being taken out of our comfort zone in no way hinders us from being at peace with God and self. It enhances the state of contentment.
“Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10 NKJV
