The Light Won’t Go Off
Have you ever owned a car when one of those pesky dashboard lights won’t go off. I have had the slippery road, the check tire pressure, and the worst one of all, the check engine light come on and not go off. My first course of action is to turn the car off and start it back up. Hopefully that will work. For the tire pressure light, I start driving with the hope that enough heat will be generated by the tire contacting the road that the tire pressure will increase and the light will go off. That trick works sometimes, but not always. The check engine light, forget that one. I have never found a way to get it, to go off.
Check engine lights come on in my life too. I feel discouraged. I begin to doubt my relationship with God. My prayers don’t seem to make it past the ceiling. I may try some quick fixes, but they usually don’t work because something inside is not working right. I must bring my life before my spiritual mechanic, the Holy Spirit, and ask Him to diagnose the real problem. I may not like His diagnosis. It usually will cost me a lot. He may say pride is blocking my spiritual arteries, humble yourself before me. Selfishness may be blocking my spiritual spark plugs. He says stop expecting to be served and serve others.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 NIV
