For the Beauty of the Earth
When I listen to WRVM every morning, the announcer mentions what national day it is. This has me investigating further, as there is more on the list than I would think. I chose “April is Poetic Earth Month”. Poetry is used to connect people to our planet Earth. Most hymns began as poems before being set to music. The hymn that immediately came to mind was a favorite of mine: “For the Beauty of the Earth”. The inspiration for the hymn occurred on a spring morning in Bath, England, in 1864. Violets and primroses dotted the rolling countryside as a young man sat atop a hill, taking in God’s creation. That man was Folliott Sandford Pierpoint, and the beauty before him stirred his soul to write one of Christianity’s most beloved hymns of gratitude. Experiencing God’s earthly beauty in the spring creates many awe-inspiring experiences for me. I understand the ease with which Pierpoint penned the poem when divine inspiration met earthly beauty. “For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth, Over and around us lies; Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise”. This hymn reminds us that every good gift – from the smallest flower to the vastness of human love – comes from God and deserves our praise.
How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” – Psalm 104:24
