Day 76
Read: Deuteronomy 16:18 – 21:9
Today’s reading should seem familiar since most of it emphasizes several things that we have previously read in order to maintain a community founded on holy living rather than selfish interests:
- Impartial Leadership
- Rejecting Spiritual Compromise
- Seek God’s Guidance
The nation of Israel was called to live a life dedicated to integrity, respect for God-given authority, and the preservation of life. The community is taught to respect appointed leadership and judicial decisions, upholding the structure God established.
In Deuteronomy 16:18-20 the command is not just for public officials, but a mandate for our daily lives even today. We are called to be vigilant against bias, dishonesty, and selfishness. The call to establish judges and officials also serves as a reminder to maintain fair laws and avoid corruption.
Where can I bring more integrity to my decisions today?
Are there areas where I am taking shortcuts or showing partiality?
In Deuteronomy 17, we read about the importance of witnesses. One witness was not sufficient to convict a person because of the inability to substantiate their testimony. The one who brought the accusation would throw the first stone in the execution and if later their testimony proved to be false, the accuser would suffer the same execution as penalty for murdering the innocent one accused. Authority was to be respected and obeyed. Disobedience was punishable by death. The law was strict in order to deter others from committing the same sin.
Deuteronomy 17:14-17 is a prophecy spoken by Moses. Keep this in mind!
Deuteronomy 18 highlights the instructions from God to the Israelites, commanding them not to adopt the detestable practices of the surrounding nations, specifically the following:
- sacrificing son or daughter in the fire,
- divination or sorcery,
- interpreting omens,
- engaging in witchcraft,
- casting spells,
- those who are mediums or spiritist,
- consulting the dead.
The word occult is derived from the Latin occultus, which means something “hidden” or “concealed,” referring to that which is inner, secret, mysterious, and beyond the range of ordinary human knowledge. All the practices listed above were common among the Canaanite religions. These exercises were dangerous not only because they identified the participant with pagan cults but also because the wisdom was sought through magical and spiritualistic means rather than from God.
Today’s reading concludes with instructions on maintaining the purity of community, dealing with unsolved murders and corporate guilt – emphasizing that life is sacred. Corporate guilt happens when a murderer was not apprehended and escaped judgment, even though the people of the city were innocent. The people of the city incurred the guilt of the unknown murder and atonement for justice had to be made.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your unwavering justice. Please grant me the wisdom to live according to Your truth, to act with integrity, and to uphold justice in my community. Help me to stand firm against influences that lead me astray. May my life reflect Your fairness and love. Amen.
