Counselor
In school I needed a guidance counselor. In college I needed an academic counselor. When I started working and earning money I needed a financial counselor. There are counselors for all areas of life. There are secular and Christian counselors. What do all counselors do? They give us advice. Often it makes sense, but it is not always 100% trustworthy.
Here is an interesting twist. How many times have we been given advice, counsel, when we did not even ask for it. Individuals who often need counsel themselves are quick to give advice to others. Here is an even more interesting twist. How many people, family and friends, have come to you for advice? They listen to what you have to say. But they do not take your advice and do what they were planning on doing anyway. That surprises me the most. We can give wise advice based on years of experience, but their minds were already made up.
The Bible speaks about another Counselor whose advice it would always be wise to take. Why? Because Jesus never gives us bad advice. He knows exactly what is best for us. However, He can only offer His advice. He does not force us to take it. He says, come to me if you are burdened and I will give you rest. He says, in Me you will have peace. In the world you will have troubles. He says, believe in me and you will have eternal life. Sounds like great advice to me.
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” James 1:19 NIV
More great advice! God’s Word is filled with it.
