God Looks at the Heart
People have a tendency to judge others by outward appearances. If a man is tall, well-groomed, well-dressed, and handsome he is often admired by others. We often choose such people to be our leaders.
Outward appearances can be deceiving. It would be accurate to say that is the superficial part of man. A person’s outward appearance does not reveal if the person can be trusted. It does not reveal if the person is forgiving, compassionate, generous, faithful, and loving.
Judas looked like any of the other disciples of Jesus. He may have even looked better than the others but looks can be deceiving. His heart was filled with sin and treachery.
I recently visited with a person and asked them what they needed prayer for. This person then shared the prayer they had been prating every day for the last three years. “Lord give to me a clear mind and a clear conscience.” That is a prayer we could all pray daily! God does not see as man sees. God looks at our heart.
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
