Cast Your Burden on the Lord
“What a stunning contrast, sun and ice,” I thought as I glanced down from my lawn chair to make sure the ice was as solid as it looked. It was a great way to begin our grand sons spring break. The sun’s rays bounced off the freshly fallen snow that surrounded the fishing pond. The boys and my husband continued to pull fish from the ice hole, some eatable, but most throw-backs.
Austin, our 15 year old, tired of fishing and asked, “Hey, G, you want to see our fort in the woods? Mitchell and I built it several summers ago. We like to go there and hang out.”
Happy to spend time with him, I said, “sure, let’s go.”
We trudged across the field, and I followed him through the woods as we dodged hanging limbs, prickly ash, and hidden boulders. “There it is,” he pointed. He explained the fort’s structure; several large logs, rocks, and branches formed in a circle. We sat down on a log and talked and laughed about past snow-mobile adventures, four-wheelers and the military.
Not one to sit long, he stood up and reached out to a small red pine tree whose branches bent and sagged under the heavy snow. With a few shakes of his wrist, the snow scattered to the ground. Relieved of her burden the tree stood up, straight and tall and free.
As I watched the tree rise, I thought of the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” We, like the tree, can be free of life’s burdens and worries as we cast all our cares on the Lord.
