Valentine’s Day 1950
(A Girl Named Gretchen)
Second grade moved into the year of 1950. I had adjusted well and had lots of friends, so I thought.
In preparation for valentine’s day, we decorated boxes with red and white crepe paper, hearts, ribbons, and bows. On the big day we set our boxes on our desks so our classmates could quietly slip the cards through the slit at the top. It was to be a big surprise when we opened the box to see how many cards were inside.
At last, the clock struck 2:00…Party Time. I watched my classmates “Oo and Ah” over the many treasures inside their valentine boxes. I opened mine to find “2 lone cars”. My heart sank, and tears formed. I tried not to let anyone see my disappointment. But, my friend Gretchen noticed, “What’s wrong Linda?” she asked.
“I only have 2 cards, everyone else has lots,” I cried. “I gave you one,” she said. “I know. Thank you.” I replied.
As the class ate frosted heart shaped cookies and drank mango juice, Gretchen got busy and passed the word. Soon, I had a handmade card from every student in the room. More than anyone else had received.
God, the great encourager, at work once again in the life of a little girl named Gretchen.
