Day 38
Read Exodus 20:1 – 22:15
Today’s reading outlines the Ten Commandments and the initial “Book of the Covenant,” establishing a framework for holy living for a delivered people. These laws, spanning relationship with God and community ethics, are not meant to earn salvation but to foster, protect, and guide a community redeemed by grace.
The Ten Commandments begin by reminding Israel of their rescue (Exodus 2:2). God first delivers, then gives the law. This pattern is crucial!
We obey NOT to be saved, but because we have been saved.
The laws are protective boundaries – like a parent keeping a child from a busy street – designed to keep us safe and in a good relationship with God and others.
Commandments 1-4 are a vertical structure: Focus on exclusive loyalty to God, avoiding idolatry, respecting His name, and keeping the Sabbath.
Commandments 5-10 are a horizontal structure: Focus on honoring parents and respecting life, marriage, property, and truth.
The laws following extend these principles into everyday life, covering servants, injury, and property damage. They emphasize justice, equity, and treating neighbors with dignity.
What in my life competes with my devotion to God?
How can I set aside time to rest from work, focus on God, and trust Him for my needs?
How am I treating others? Do I show love and integrity in my interactions? Do I honor the spirit of the law and not just the letter?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for bringing me out of my own “Egypt” through Jesus. Let Your laws not be a burden, but a guide for holy living. Help me to love You supremely and my neighbor as myself. Amen.
