God Is Our Refuge
There are moments in life, where you just know God’s hand of protection was upon you. Years ago, on one vacation in Kenya, I visited a tiny island in the Indian Ocean called Lamu. It has breathtaking sites, known for it’s beauty and long history. There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island. The modes of transportation include walking, biking, donkeys, and dhows. I boarded a dhow and traveled about 2 miles to a smaller island to visit some ancient ruins.
While I was walking around, I saw this beautiful small green snake in a tree. I instinctively reached out to touch it, but something made me pull my hand back. Later, I learned it was a poisonous snake. Thank you, Jesus, for watching over me!
The road between Lamu and Mombasa, a coastal city, was a long, lonely, and dusty ride in my VW van. Before leaving Lamu for Mombasa I heard there were robbers along that road. Unfortunately, even today robbers along some of the highways attack vehicles, especially trucks carrying livestock or product. I remember asking God for safety.
In a secluded area, I noticed a bus was pulled over and people were getting out. Seconds later, I knew why. Armed robbers with AK47 rifles were looting the bus. One stepped out from behind the bus with a rifle and motioned for me to stop. I was just a couple feet from him. We looked each other in the eye, and for some strange reason he motioned for me to leave. I left as fast as a 4cylinder VW van could go. I wonder what was going through his mind that made him let me go? Thank you, Jesus, for watching over me.
