Overcomers
Throughout my journey I have had to overcome many illnesses and accidents. As a child I had to overcome the effects of polio if I was ever to walk again. That was followed by at least nine broken bones. Then there was a serious bicycle accident that could have been fatal. I am sure each of you can recall things you had to overcome in life up to this moment on your journey. God gave us bodies that have a remarkable ability to heal themselves, often with the help of modern medicine.
There is another type of pain that we face on our journey that may even be more difficult to overcome, emotional pain. Emotional giants, such as fear, anger, doubt, depression, loneliness, addiction, insecurity, etc. can even be more crippling than polio. There are no antibiotics one can swallow or surgeries one can undergo to cure those pains.
Just as we turn to modern medicine to cure what ails the physical body, we can turn to our heavenly Father to cure what ails our souls. The healing of our souls begins with personal faith in Jesus. Oh, just as our physical bodies take time to heal, so does it take time for our souls to heal from pain. Because God is the great physician of our souls, healing will take place. We also relish the hope of one day being free of all pain. We will never shed another tear.
“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:5 NIV
