Free At Last
I cannot imagine what life must be like for those who are held as hostages. No judge sets a time limit is given for their confinement. One day they are free and the next day they are being held captive as pawns in some form of political gamesmanship.
The American Hostage Crisis in Iran greatly impacted my journey. I was saved in Iran. I was preparing and planning to go back there as a missionary. That all changed in November of 1979 when the American embassy was breached, and Americans were taken hostage. Those of us alive at the time remember the pictures of blindfolded hostages being paraded in front of the cameras.
Amid the chaos, the missionary who led me to the Lord had to flee Iran for his life. All his earthly possessions had to be abandoned there. He drove his car to the airport, parked it, got out, and handed the keys to the first Iranian he saw and told him he now had a new car.
Those in the embassy were not so fortunate. One day turned into weeks, weeks into months. They spent 443 days wondering when they would be released. Then on day 444 they were finally freed.
Physical captivity is awful but there is another form of captivity, spiritual captivity. Sin promises to free us and make us happy. All it does is control us and warp our sense of right and wrong. Only faith in Jesus Christ can set us free!
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV
