Bread
Does bread sound boring to you? Growing up my mother would make homemade bread and buns regularly. I would look forward to coming home from school and enjoying a slice of mom’s warm freshly baked bread. I can still taste it in my mouth. It was anything but boring.
I moved away from home and had to start buying cheap white bread. When money was tight, I would even stop buy the day old bakery store and stock up on white sliced bread. Now that was boring.
When I went to Iran in 1970 my taste for bread mushroomed. I cannot remember eating one slice of white bread for two years. Sangak, barabri, taftoon, and lavash are the most common forms of bread consumed in Iran. Each type is prepared differently. They come in a variety of flavors, textures, sizes, and shapes. Most mornings I would go down to the local bread bakery, the bread needs to be eaten fresh, buy a two foot long, one foot wide, and one inch thick sangak. On the way back to the village I would buy some fresh Kurdish goat cheese to spread on it. Still can taste it.
During Passover, which was yesterday, Jews eat unleavened bread which celebrates their escape from Egypt. As they wandered in the desert God gave them bread to eat from heaven. Jesus told His disciples that He was the Bread of Life. Never boring!
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 NIV
