Dealing With Disappointment
Friends disappoint us. Our jobs disappoint us. We disappoint ourselves and God at times for the choices we make. Our government disappoints us for the choices they make. Things disappoint us too. I buy something that according to commercials, is supposed to have a meal ready in five minutes, or a pan that will last forever. I ended up disappointed because the product did not meet my expectations. We all face and deal with disappointment daily. Some are much harder to deal with than others, like a close friend letting you down or ghosting you.
We become disappointed basically because our expectations do not match reality. Our expectations are too high. All non-stick pans eventually wear out. An instant pot may make a meal in five minutes but you better like the taste of pressure-cooked food. There is no such thing as a perfect friend. We do things and say things that may hurt one another without it being the least bit intentional. We forgive, let go, and move on, hopefully closer than before. We cannot control the choices others make that ultimately disappoint us.
Sometimes disappointment may even keep us from asking God for the impossible. We don’t want to be disappointed, so we don’t ask. Don’t be afraid to ask God for hard things. When we ask according to His will nothing is too difficult.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” 1 John 5:14-15 NIV
