Getting It Right
We have all heard the expression, you only get to make a first impression once. When meeting people in a foreign culture that takes on even more significance. All the non-verbal cues you have learned about how to greet someone go out the window. In Iran, a nod of the head we would take as a yes, actually is a no. A smile at a mother’s new baby instead of connoting admiration, means you are putting an evil eye on the baby. Getting it right means we must learn what not to do and what to do. We take our cues from how others greet each other in the culture.
We only have one life to live on this earth. The Bible tells us that the way to get it right the first time is to focus on heavenly matters and not earthly matters. The way to make our lives count is to leave our sinful lives behind and live for God. We will never get it wrong when we follow the example of Jesus Christ. Walk in His steps! We can take our cues from Him!
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 NIV
