I was just learning how to drive. I was staying at my brother-in-law’s cabin, and I had to move the car. Well, I backed into another person’s vehicle and put a good size dent in it. I felt awful and was not sure what my brother-in-law would say. I was sure I would have to somehow pay for the damages. Well, the gentleman, whose car I backed into, came out and just told me not to worry. He would take care of fixing it.
When people show us mercy we are filled with gratitude and want to express our appreciation for “letting us off the hook.” God has done just that for me so many times. His mercy did come with a price, the death of Jesus on the cross.
God says the best way we can show how grateful we are for His mercy is to be willing to offer up our lives to Him in obedience and service.
To be willing to change how we live, the Apostle Paul states that we need to first change how we think. Don’t Conform! Be Transformed! How? Change the way we think.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 NIV
