When I was growing up as a child in a small town situated on the banks of the Fox River in Northeast Wisconsin most summer evenings after dinner a group of us would get together and play kick the can. Now, if you can remember playing kick the can as a child, that dates you.
We would all gather around a large old dented can. Someone would be picked to guard the can, close his or her eyes, count to 10, and then come looking for us. Ten seconds does not give one much time to find a good hiding spot. There were two basic options. Hide close to the can and when the person guarding the can goes away from you, run to the can, kick it and you will be free. You could also try and get as far away as possible. The further away you got, the more secure your hiding place was.
God tells us in His Word that He is our hiding place. When we draw close to Him, He protects us from all trouble. Not only will it not find us, but it will also be a peaceful place. When we “hide” in Him He gives us wise advice on how to steer clear of future trouble. These are awesome promises.
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32”7-8 NIV
