I was walking back up to the Village of Sarab Saeed in Iran after a day’s work at a government office in Iran. It was like any other trek back up to that muddy village. That all changed as I was about to enter the main entrance to the village.
A person had just died in the village. A small crowd had gathered as they were carrying the dead person away. What happened next sticks in my memory to this day. Certain women in the crowd, I assume they were relatives of the deceased, were wailing, throwing dirt in the air, and pulling their hair out by the roots. Others were trying to comfort them. It was a chaotic scene. I thought to myself, have they no hope?
During my time in Iran whenever I heard wailing, I knew someone had just died. It is such an awful hopeless sound. That hopeless sound was a part of what God used in my life to become actively involved in missions. People outside of Christ have no hope. I wanted to be part of those who brought hope to the hopeless. I wanted to return to Iran and bring hope there, but the Shah lost power and things changed drastically.
The Word of God says we are to serve as lights and salt on this earth. Our purpose is to glorify God by bringing light to the hopeless and by living a godly life wherever He puts us.
“You are the salt of the earth” “You are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:13;14 NKJV
