I don’t know the exact date this happened on. It was like a light came on in my mind. I woke up one morning as a teenager and I knew everything. If my parents tried to tell me something was black, I would try to convince them it was white. My pride led to a lot of arguing. It always does.
Many years later in life, I don’t know the exact date this happened on. It was like a different light came on in my mind. I woke up one morning as an adult and realized I knew nothing. Bad people seemed to skate through life unscathed. Really good people, with young children, were being diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer. Life no longer made sense to me. There was a lot I needed to figure out about what I observed going on around me. That was humbling. At least I was in a state of mind where I was teachable.
For several years the mission agency I was a part of, asked me to travel to college campuses and churches around the country, to challenge Christians to consider full time missionary work. One of the qualities I looked for early in the interview process was, did the person have a teachable heart. That character trait says a lot about the person.
The way a person obtains wisdom is by having a teachable heart. Wisdom helps us understand why bad people seem to prosper and good people suffer.
“Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.” Proverbs 19:20 ESV
