Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month our church opens its doors and lets those in need from our community come in and shop for free. People come in and can take what they need of cleaning supplies, oral hygiene products, baby diapers, coats, hats, gloves, and the list goes on. It is all free thanks to the generosity of many from our church and the community. The ministry is called the “SonShine Room.”
That ministry has now gone global. They have adopted an orphanage in Zambia, called Faith Children’s Village. This week they just sent eight large barrels filled with 60 sets of new twin sheets, a large toolbox filled with every kind of metric wrench you could imagine, numerous new towel and washcloth sets, and the list goes on.
What impresses me is that the ministry made it very clear that whatever is donated must be new or in a condition where you would wear it. Nothing would be given to others that you would not use yourself. Most of the items in those eight barrels are new.
We are a small church, but we are a generous church. It is such a blessing to watch how God works in the hearts of His people as they follow His teaching.
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35 NIV
