When I went to Iran as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I was aware that Iranians held deeply entrenched beliefs. Their view of how women should be treated was very different from the way we believe women should be treated in the west. Wives walked a few steps behind their husbands, never beside them.
While I was living in the village there was a total eclipse of the moon that looked blood red. It is called a Blood Moon. Well, when the Iranians witnessed it, they believed Satan had taken control of the moon and he had to be driven away. They attempted to drive him away by beating on 55-gallon metal drums wherever they could find them.
We too have deeply entrenched beliefs. Gum stays in your stomach seven years if you swallow it. Eating carrots makes your vision better. The Northern Lights are a reflection off the Artic ice cap. None of those are true, yet I grew up believing them to be true.
There is only one thing that can overcome deeply entrenched beliefs and that is truth. The Bible says that you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free. What deeply entrenched beliefs do we need to be set free from?
Do our good deeds really outweigh our bad deeds? Is it lack faith, if God does not answer our prayers? If you are spiritual, you will always be happy. Be transformed by truth!
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 NIV
