We were set to begin a new men’s Bible Study. To kick it off we agreed to begin it with a cookout at my house. One of the men in our study is a highly qualified bear hunting guide. Seeing the beginning of bear hunting season and the beginning of the men’s Bible study fell on the same day we came up with this idea.
The bear guide would hunt in a nearby woods where he had successfully hunted bears before. The rest of us would eat, have fellowship and help him after he had harvested his bear. I was totally confident, as was he, that everything would go according to plan. Well, we had a great cookout and enjoyable fellowship but no bear. In fact, he never harvested a bear during the entire season.
I was overconfident about how everything would go that night. The Apostle Peter was overconfident the night Jesus was to be betrayed. As the small group ate the Passover meal together and Jesus foretold His upcoming arrest, Peter confidently told Jesus that he would never desert Him. Yet, we know that before the rooster crowd, he would deny Him three times.
When things are going smoothly in our journey it is easy to let down our guard, become overconfident, and not keep doing what we were doing, praying, reading His Word, and trusting in Him.
“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” 1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV
