My daughter and I were talking on the phone yesterday and I mentioned to her how blessed I am to have so many quality friends in my life. Then I realized that one of the reasons for that is where I met most of my friends, at church. There are some old sayings that ring true. “You are the company you keep.” “Birds of a feather flock together.” When you spend time with God’s people your journey is blessed. Oh, there will still be those hard times, but you will not be alone to go through them. Friends are there for each other during the good, the bad, and the ugly. Perhaps that is why those who have close friends are 50% more likely to survive to old age.
Friends play a huge role in our journey. When our journey becomes rocky and things are not going as we had anticipated, that is when true friends show up. True friends reach out to support and encourage while “fair weather” friends disappear into the mist.
In Christ we are family, brothers and sisters. Taking time to invest in friendships is worth it. Part of that investment is spending time together with our brothers and sisters.
“24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV
