Lessons Chores Teach
Routine household tasks are many. We know them well. We need to take out the garbage, wash dishes, dust, clean floors, take out the dog, feed the dog, feed the cats, clean the cat litter, wash clothes, put the clothes away and the list goes on.
Through doing chores we learn responsibility. I am responsible for the animal’s care, taking out the garbage, cutting the grass, etc. We learn time management. I do certain things at certain times of the day so that I am free to do other things. We learn resourcefulness through doing chores. Who doesn’t want to find ways to do something you don’t like doing easier and faster. I love our dish washer. How many things have we bought to clean our floors easier and faster?
However, there is one very important final lesson we need to learn. Don’t become so busy doing chores, we forget what is important in life.
“But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:40-42
Take time today to learn from Jesus. It is the best time of any day!
