Sibling Rivalry
Families are amazing. They form the core of any society. When the family unit is strong and cohesive society prospers. We all know what happens when the family unit falls apart. It can get awfully ugly in a quick hurry.
Every family unit has its own growing pains. For example, pride, jealousy, and selfishness need to be replaced with humility, kindness, love, forgiveness, and generosity. Some families figure that out and some never seem to. No family is perfect, but some are further along on their journey than others. Some members of the family get it and some never seem to.
Jacob’s family in the Old Testament gives us an example of what families ought not to look like. Joseph’s brothers were so jealous of him they devised a plan to murder him. We know how the story turns out, but it shows us how sin can devastate families for generations.
The church, which is God’s family, is not immune from the sins of pride, jealousy, and selfishness. The Christian family ought to be a witness to the community about how God’s children can live together in unity, forgiving and loving each-other. We need to get it!
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” Psalm 133:1 NIV
Amen!
