If Trees Could Talk
One of the things that drew us to buy the property on which we were to build our retirement home was a giant oak tree. It is not that tall, but its branches spread wide. It must be well over 150 years old.
The first thing it would tell me is that when I was very small, about 150 years ago, this massive fire swept through the area. Because I was on a hill and far from other trees the fire went around me. However, all I could see was smoke filling the sky for miles. I felt sorry for the other trees that got burned to the ground and for the many people who died that day. It was an awful start to my young life and one I wanted to forget.
I was still very young when a linden tree started growing right next to me. It was so close I could feel it touching me. It grew much faster than me and began to take away the sun I needed to stay strong and survive. Our roots fought for the same moisture and nutrients in the sandy soil. That probably even made me stronger over time. Many storms have tried to topple me, but I would not blow over. I am a mighty oak tree.
We are not oak trees, but we all have a story to tell about how Jesus has saved us and has been nourishing us and protecting us. Give Him the glory that we are stronger today than ever before.
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.” Proverbs 11:30 NIV
