Apprenticeship
I remember when I started working for a building contractor. My first job was to drywall a new home. I had never done that before. The only thing I ever built was a doghouse and that did not take a lot of skill. Working under the guidance of a great teacher over the next few years I learned how to shingle a roof, lay out walls, cut rafters, install windows, doors, and do siding. After several years I knew how to build a house from start to finish. Pete was a patient teacher. I made many mistakes along the way. I had to rebuild more than one crooked wall. He never got angry at me when I made mistakes, some which cost him money. He just came alongside me and showed me what I did wrong and how to do better going forward. He was a follower of Jesus.
Jesus is our teacher. When we place our faith in Him, we begin the process of learning spiritual lessons that we never knew before. We become disciples of His. At first it does not seem to make sense. The humble will inherit the earth. To save your life you first need to lose it. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hurt you. The longer we follow Him the more the above makes sense.
“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” Luke 9:23-24 NIV
