Anger is a powerful emotion that can be useful but needs to be controlled. Someone “rubs” us the wrong way, says the wrong thing, or does something to offend us and we get angry and say things we wish we never did. The emotions a person feels from being wronged have a way of expressing themselves inappropriately, bad.
Feeling those types of emotions takes a lot of energy and gets in the way of relationships and our peace of mind. We know that is not where God want us to be. He wants our minds to be at peace. So how can we be angry and not sin? Clearly that is what God’s Word tells us is possible.
Here is a side of anger not many people consider. Anger can be a powerful motivator, for good or evil. People get angry, feel rage, join protest groups, and destroy property, bad. People confront sin in their life, no matter the sin, see the damage it leaves on all around them, get angry at the sin, and get help, like alcoholics anonymous, or anger management, good. People even get angry at their illness, and raise money to find a cure, good.
Anger under control and directed towards rectifying an injustice was demonstrated by Jesus when He overturned the tables of the money changers in the Temple. It is OK to feel anger, but don’t let anger turn into sin.
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,” Ephesians 4:26
