Letting go of something can be hard to do. My dog Jack is a perfect example of what I mean. He needs lots of exercise. What better activity to do with a dog than play, “fetch.” Well, Jack loves to chase the ball, retrieve the ball, bring the ball to me, but then he refuses to give it up. He takes the game to another level and wants me to chase him around the yard to get the ball back. That’s how he plays with other dogs, but I am not another dog.
In some ways we are all like Jack. We want to hold onto things in our lives and not let go. Worry may be one of those things we won’t let go of. It becomes natural to worry about the past or worry about the future. What if I did this or that? What if this or that happens tomorrow, next week, or next month?
We want to hold on to the pain of being hurt by other’s actions or words. People can say and do some very hurtful things either intentionally or unintentionally. The longer we hold on to that pain the deeper resentment can grow.
Here is a big one the Bible talks about. We need to let go of trying to pay for our own sins. What a waste of emotional energy. Trust that Jesus paid it all!
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 NIV
