The Art of Silence
Do you enjoy silence? I had to have my hearing checked years ago and they put me in a soundproof room to do it. It was eerie being totally cut off from all sound. They said they had to do that so I could only hear the sounds they wanted me to hear. I would have to raise my hand when I first heard various types of sounds.
We have all heard the expression, silence is golden. The full idiom is, speech is silver, and silence is golden. The art of being able to remain silent is a greater virtue than talking all the time. How many times would it have been wiser to bite our tongue than say what we did! I so often think I have something that needs to be said to defend myself in a disagreement. Listening in silence is often the best choice. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Where have you heard that before?
When was the last time you found a silent spot and a silent time to be alone with God? It is good to talk with God at those times. I get it. But if we are always talking with God, how can we hear what He wants to tell us. Learning to be silent before God, in a silent space, is an art. It needs to be practiced because we do not like total silence.
“The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” Habakkuk 2:20 NIV
