Rest
After a hard day’s work what is the one thing that you look forward to at the end of the day? Rest. The body needs rest to rebuild itself. I am sure there is a medical explanation for that process.
Monika kept telling me that while I was sleeping, I would stop breathing and then suddenly gasp for breath. Often, she would nudge me to get me breathing again. I had a sleep study done and they determined I was stopping breathing 60 times per hour. The Dr. said that was extreme and put me on a CPAP machine immediately. I finally had a good night’s rest. That was huge.
I often get my best ideas when resting. I might wake up in the middle of the night for that inevitable trip to you know where and have a hard time falling back asleep. I just lay quietly under the covers, Mittens comes and lays next to me purring, and I think about the next blog I am going to write in the morning. My mind is at rest so new creative thoughts can enter.
My soul also needs rest. Serving God and serving others wears a person out. The ministry is spiritually exhausting. Many pastors suffer burn out because they know how to care for the souls of others but forget about their soul needing rest. David was often under tremendous stress. He found his rest in the Lord. There is no more peaceful place to find rest for our souls.
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” Psalm 62:1 NIV
