Keeping Secrets
My daughter and son-in-law were scheduled to arrive back for the summer a week ago. Many friends were waiting for their return. One of them was my daughter’s childhood friend. Her friend’s daughter was graduating from high school. It would mean a lot if they could be together for that, but plans were to arrive a day later. However, I knew a secret. She wanted to show up at the graduation ceremony and surprise her friend. It worked. It brought tears to their eyes as they reunited.
We have all heard about the proverbial “elephant in the living room.” There is this huge issue that both husband and wife know about but refuse the discuss because it “opens up a can of worms.” So, they keep their true feelings secret from each other. The elephant only grows larger until, well, you know what comes next, not good.
There is another kind of secret. Trying to hide what we have done wrong. For example, we drank from the vodka bottle. To hide our tracks, we filled it back up to the previous level with water, thinking no one would notice. That never works. How good were you at hiding what you did wrong? Adam, and Eve tried to hide what they did wrong and keep it a secret from God. That didn’t work so well either. We all can use a reminder that “honesty is the best policy.” It will all come out in the end!
“For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” Luke 8:17 NIV
