Don’t Forget
Today is Memorial Day. It is the day we remember our fallen heroes who died in defense of our freedom. If we had not made it a National Holiday, I wonder how many would forget our fallen heroes. We have a propensity to forget.
Stones were often used in the Old Testament to remember significant events in a person’s life. Jacob had a dream of a stairway going up to heaven. When he woke up in the morning, he placed a memorial stone there and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:17 NIV
As the Israelites crossed the Jordan river, God stopped the river from flowing so they could cross on dry ground. God ordered 12 stones be taken from the center of the river and placed in a pile at Gilgal. Why? “21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.” Joshua 4:21-22 NIV The Israelites also had a propensity to forget.
As Jesus was concluding the last Passover meal, He would share with His disciples He said, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19 Jesus knew we might even forget His purpose for coming to earth without some form of symbolism to jog our memories. Never Forget!
“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—3 who forgives all your sins.” Psalm 103:2-3 NIV
