Is It Worth It?
That is a question I have been asking myself a lot more recently. I have planted many trees over my lifetime. When we moved into our current home, I always wanted trees to line the 270-foot driveway. I bought many maple tree seedlings and planted them up and down the driveway. I did not realize that for the next five years I would have to fertilize and water the trees because our home was built on sand and gravel. The soil was awful. It took lots of effort, there was the risk they could die, and considerable pain endured watering those trees, but it was worth it. Every time I drive up or down the driveway, I appreciate how nice it looks.
Whenever we do something that requires consistent effort, risk, and pain over time we need to count the cost. Is it worth it? Is it worth going to college? Is it worth changing jobs? Is it worth relocating to another city? Is it worth buying this thing, this car, or this house? Whatever we do that is significant in life comes with a cost.
God looked down on a world filled with selfishness, pride, and jealousy. I wonder if this thought ever crossed His mind, are they worth saving? It would require moving heaven and earth to accomplish it. He counted the cost! He gave His best.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV
