Shortly after we settled into our retirement home, we bought two Mouflon sheep. Looking back, I don’t know what possessed us to make such a purchase.
Overnight I became a shepherd of a small flock of Mouflon sheep, which most people think are either small deer or goats. The first thing I learned is that they needed protection from predators. Because of their ability to jump I needed to surround their enclosure with an eight-foot-high fence. I buried some of the fence below ground level to keep predators from digging under it and made sure it was high enough to keep them from escaping.
Once their pasture was secure, they needed fresh water and food. It did not matter if it was 90 degrees or minus 20 degrees, their need for food and water remained the same. If it was sunny outside or the wind was howling and a blizzard was raging, their need for food and water remained the same. I was learning what being a shepherd meant.
Jesus is my shepherd. Because He is my shepherd, I will lack nothing. I cannot provide for myself what Jesus can only provide, spiritual food and water. I cannot provide for myself what Jesus can only provide, spiritual protection.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” Psalm 26:1 NIV
